When considering sustainable design, a holistic approach is often preferable. In addition to considering the overall product and system design we should consider how the product or system will be used, how it will be powered and its expected life.
Human-centred design (HCD) is an approach to designing products, systems or services that focuses on the user’s needs and requirements, the aim is to solve a human problem in the most efficient and effective way for the end-user. How useable is your product?
Developing a good system design is central to building safe, reliable, extensible, and cost-effective products and services, but what is the system design? It is probably best to think of how we get to a system design and that will explain what it is.
The products that we work on typically have some electronic or software components. Sometimes the electronics or software might be quite simple, turning on LEDs or reading switches. Often we are designing more complex systems that automate a process in response to a measured stimuli such as a heating system responding to a thermostat.
Westwood Rock’s main regulatory expertise covers regulatory approvals for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), Radio (RED and FCC) and Medical Devices (MDR, FDA). However, our design, verification and validation experience allow us to help you in other areas where fault tolerant design is important.
Proof of concept and feasibility studies allow us to assess ideas or concepts in more detail. When we are satisfied that we have an idea or concept that might make a successful product, system, or service then we may suggest developing a proof of concept. This provides us with something that we can use to measure and test with.
Project management begins with project planning. We will keep you updated with regular reviews, budgets, and risk assessments so that you know how your project is progressing in time, in budget and so that there are no surprises. We accommodate the project management preferences of our clients and we are comfortable working with both Waterfall and Agile Methodologies.
To enable CE or FCC marking of electronic devices, the devices will need to be tested for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). EMC testing checks that an electronic device does not emit electromagnetic energy above a prescribed threshold and inadvertently interferes with other electronic devices. Similarly, it checks that the electronic device is not susceptible to certain levels of electromagnetic energy.
Thermal management influences product and system reliability but some thermal management techniques can impair usability or aesthetics. It is imperative that the full design team work together to develop effective thermal management.
We have designed with almost every type of computer sub-system or microcontroller. From low power battery operated microcontrollers intended to last for months or years without a battery change, to high speed parallel computer sub systems used in robotic surgery where safety and fault tolerance are paramount – we have designed every system.
Prior to developing medical devices, we worked in the design and verification of aerospace components and systems. Consequently, we have extensive experience in design for safety critical and mission critical systems.
Westwood Rock was founded by engineers who already had RF and high speed digital experience from working with Radar, maritime radio, broadcast and consumer applications and had been published in the IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium. They had also taken their designs through EMC testing and CE marking.
Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs) are programmed or configured using a Hardware Description Language (HDL). The languages we normally use are VHDL and Verilog. In addition to FPGAs and CPLDs we have significant expertise in designing full-custom and semi-custom integrated circuits (ICs) or microchips, known as Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) design. We can take your digital and mixed signal design from layout to fabrication.
Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the growing network of ‘smart’ objects or devices that connect over a local network or the internet. The purpose of this network of devices is to exchange data typically devices in the network can respond to each other, to people, other networks, machines, the environment, or a combination of any of these.
Designing a product or system to operate efficiently on batteries requires very careful design of the circuits, including radios and peripherals, any embedded software, device drivers or programmable logic devices and of course the battery management itself.
Our experience in this area is extensive, from vision mixing desks, routing systems, standards conversion, noise reduction and digital cinema - demonstrating one of the first presentations of Digital Cinema in 1999.
Embedded software or firmware is software that runs on a microcontroller or processor core, more information on Embedded Software will be displayed here shortly. If you have a requirement for Embedded Software please contact us and one of our specialists will be pleased to discuss it with you.
Information on Software Life Cycle will be displayed here shortly. If you have a requirement for Software Life Cycle please contact us and one of our specialists will be pleased to discuss it with you.
User experience (UX) refers to any interaction a user has with a product or service. UX design considers each element that shapes this experience, how it makes the user feel, and how easy it is for the user to accomplish their desired tasks.
